By ensuring that the entire line contains either DOWN or ACROSS (and nothing else), you can be reasonably safe from deviant clues to the crossword puzzles. If there are blank lines that are not wanted, you can remove them. Indeed, you could arrange to replace ACROSS with and DOWN with quite easily. In combination with your other question, you can treat a DOWN line much the same as above. That's easily managed, but outside the scope of the immediate question. That is simpler to understand, but leaves you with a couple of intermediate files to remove, even if someone gets stroppy and hits the interrupt key. You could create little files and read those in appropriate places instead of using the insert and append operations. The last line of the script removes the ACROSS line of the data. The sixth through fourteenth lines insert the other constant material into the file. The third, fourth and fifth lines insert and lines before the title line. The third line is one way to replace any sequence of two or more underscores with three underscores. The second line replaces ellipsis with spaces between the dots with ellipsis with no spaces between the dot.

I know these are not correct, but the closest I can come to describing the code I am interested in. With Clean Text, you can write text on Mac and then find it on any iOS device. I have not been able to get Sed to process actual regular expressions: I am editing and cleaning up multiple text files, preparing them to be input in another piece of software.

I created a shortcut that copies text from the input (share a plain text file to it) and opens Clean Text where you can paste it. Clean up spaces, line breaks, HTML, Word formatting and other perform basic text operations. One note at a time without a subscription or in-app purchase. When you’re done you can copy the text to another app or export it to Files. It has tools to fix line breaks, join paragraphs, remove empty lines, replace tabs with spaces, and lots more. Unlike other note-takers I’ve used, Clean Text, as the name suggests, cleans your text. Clean Text doesn’t try to force you into its own note-taking paradigm in fact it’s not a traditional note-taking app at all.
But plain text is a great backup solution. I still use Apple Notes for its rich text and support for images. I’ve been gradually transitioning my notes into plain text. I believe Clean Text is the purest expression of plain text editing for iPhones and iPads, like TextEdit on Mac.
